It was the PSLV's 17th consecutive successful mission out of the 18 launches from Sriharikota. At the end of 18 minutes of “a delightful” flawless flight, the fourth stage of the rocket shot India's Resourcesat-2 into its orbit. About 40 seconds later, the fourth stage bulleted again the Youthsat and the X-sat into their orbits. The accuracy was such that the Resourcesat-2 reached an orbit at an altitude of 822.9 km against the targeted 822 km.

Massive uranium deposits found in Andhra Pradesh

Megastar Chiranjeevi's younger daughter, Srija, on Monday lodged a complaint with the Central Crime Station women police in Hyderabad against her husband, Sirish Bhardwaj, alleging that she was ill-treated physically and abused by her husband and mother-in-law.

Pakistan test fires Hataf-2

Pakistan on Friday said it had successfully tested its short range surface-to-surface ballistic missile Hataf-2 (Abdali) as part of the ongoing process of validation and technical improvements in the nation's Land Based Ballistic Missile Systems.

According to a statement put out by Pakistan's Inter Services Public Relations, Hataf-2 has a range of 180 km and can carry nuclear as well as conventional warheads.

The test was conducted at an undisclosed place in the presence of the Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Khalid Shameem Wynne, and other senior officers of the strategic organisations.

The Abdali weapons system, according to General Wynne, provided Pakistan with an operational level capability in addition to the strategic level capability.

India’s Strategic Forces Command (SFC), which handles missiles with nuclear warheads, fired Dhanush and Prithvi-II missiles on Friday within a gap of an hour, establishing the readiness of India’s nuclear deterrence systems. Both Dhanush and Prithvi-II are surface-to-surface missiles that can carry nuclear warheads. They are products of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The twin-success, coming in the wake of the DRDO firing an interceptor on March 6 to bring down an "enemy" ballistic missile in mid-flight, has boosted the morale of the DRDO missile technologists.

Dhanush and Prithvi-II were launched in a similar salvo mode on March 27, 2010. There are Army, Navy and Air Force versions of Prithvi, which is a single-stage missile that uses liquid propellants. Both Dhanush, the Naval version and Prithvi-II can carry nuclear warheads weighing 500 kg each. The stabilisation platforms of Dhanush-based ships enable its launching even during rough sea.

Urgent mail delivered after 20 years

An urgent mail sent from Pakistan's Toba Tek Singh town to Karachi 20 years ago in 1991 has finally been delivered.

The urgent mail reached on Wednesday, Dawn reported.

Rafiq Chishti, who had waited endlessly to receive the mail, said his parents had sent his academic certificates to him in Karachi in 1991. He was studying in a seminary and the documents were required to apply for a job.

The documents were posted through the Urgent Mail Service. It's a postal department service for quick delivery.

The mail didn't reach him and he made several representations to the authorities, but to no avail.

Chishti said he was informed on Wednesday by the present occupant of his Karachi residence that his mail had reached.

Bandra Fire Accedent 21 Injured, 2000 became homeless

At least 21 people were injured and over 2,000 people, including 'Slumdog Millionaire' child actor Rubina Ali, rendered homeless in the big fire which was controlled in the wee hours today in suburban Bandra here.

"A total of 21 persons including 4 firemen were injured while fighting the flames which broke out last night. They have been admitted to the Bhabha hospital here," a fire official said.

However, no death has been reported so far. But over 2,000 people have lost their homes as hundreds of shanties were destroyed in the blaze, he said.

In an apparent act of brinkmanship, the DMK today decided to pull out of the Congress-led Government at the Centre after talks between the two parties on seat-sharing for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections failed.

DMK President M Karunanidhi, who had last night accused the Congress of being unreasonable in its demand, today charged the ally of trying to push it out of the UPA.

The meeting of the party's high-powered committee presided over by him adopted a resolution to pull out of the government and to give issue-based support.

The new rule, under the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, that was originally to have come into effect from February 27, applies to everyone — telemarketers as well as regular customers. With this, mobile-phone users cannot send more than 100 messages a day even if they are willing to pay extra for this privilege.
